ABSTRACT

This case report examines the impact of cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS) in a 10-year-old boy diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The focus is on how CDS symptoms, such as attention deficits, fatigue, and motivational issues, affect the child’s academic and social performance, highlighting the need for individualized interventions. Diagnosed with ASD at age 4, the child received early interventions, including speech and occupational therapy. Despite progress in these areas, challenges with attention, task completion, and peer engagement persisted. A multi-disciplinary approach was used, involving behavioral strategies, structured routines, and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for motivation and fatigue management. Classroom accommodations were also provided. Following intervention, the child showed improvements in attention, academic performance, and social skills. Behavioral techniques and CBT addressed key issues, leading to enhanced task engagement and social interactions. This case emphasizes the importance of personalized strategies in managing both ASD and CDS.
