ABSTRACT

Objectives:

The aim of this study was to examine the impact of the Coronavirus diseases-2019 (COVID-19 ) epidemic period on smartphone use and sleep of adolescents.

Materials and Methods:

The research is a descriptive type study and data were collected through the form created with the Googleforms program. One hundred fifty five adolescents in a high school in Aydın province participated in the study. Research data were collected as online with “The Short Form of The Smartphone Addiction Scale”, “The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality index”, “The pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale” and “Introductory Information Form” which was prepared by the researcher. Descriptive, comparative and correlational statistics were used in the analysis of the data.

Results:

56.8% of the participants stated that during the COVID-19 epidemic, sleep time was 8 hours and above, and 40% used a smartphone all day. A significant positive correlation was found between smartphone addiction, daytime sleepiness, and sleep quality of adolescents (p<0.05). Regression analysis results showed that 25.2% of the variance in daytime sleepiness and sleep quality index was explained by smartphone addiction. Smartphone addiction had a significant effect on daytime sleepiness and sleep quality (p<0.05)

Conclusion:

Our study found that adolescents in the COVID-19 epidemic had a high risk of smartphone addiction and that smartphone addiction affected daytime sleepiness and sleep quality.
