ABSTRACT
Objective:
Students in peer bullying status differentiate as bullies, victims, bully-victims (both do bullying and be exposed to bullying) and bystanders (children who are not involved in bullying events). The main aim of this study was to investigate whether the self-esteem scores differ according to the peer bullying statuses of secondary school children. Additionally, gender and grade levels’ effect on self-esteem and bullying were examined.
Method:
Sample of the study was selected from six different public schools between 5 to 8 grade 1740 students in İzmir. Data was collected by sociodemographic information form, Peer Bullying Scale- Child Form, Coopersmith Selfesteem Inventory- Short Form.
Result:
It was found that student, who were in bully-victim status had lower self-esteem scores than other students and additionally, bystanders had higher self-esteem scores.
Discussion:
It was thought that it would be shed light on forward bullying prevention studies. It is recommended that studies for bullying prevention should include studies for strengthening self-esteem. Additionally, it was thought that the study would be benefi cial especially on the 7th and 8th grade students.
