ABSTRACT

Objective:

Relationship of adolescents with their parents affect their mental health. The concept that describes negative interaction between adolescents and their parents is confl ict. In our literature, there seems to be a need for some instruments that could measure confl icts between adolescents and their parents. Aim of this study was to develop a scale that could measure the degree of confl ict between the adolescent and his/her parent, based on the adolescent’s self- report and to investigate psychometric properties of this instrument.

Method:

This cross-sectional study was conducted with the participation of 103 girl and 189 boy (mean = 16.71; SD = 1.65) high school students between 14-18 years of age. Data were interpreted by using reliability and validity analyses besides explatory and confi rmatory factor analysis methods.

Results:

According to the analyses, internal consistency coeffi cient of singledimensioned 12- item adolescent- parent confl ict scale with 44% variance was measured as 0.88. The scale’s itemtotal score correlations ranged between 0.63 and 0.74 (p<0.01). According to confi rmatory factor analysis, RMSEA value was found as 0.076 (p<0.01). A moderate and positive relationship was present between this scale and dimensions of Brief Symptom Inventory (correlation coeffi cients ranged between 0.35 and 0.43; p<0.01).

Discussion:

To conclude, the scale was proven to be a valid and reliable tool. In future, it might be clinically benefi cial to carry out novel researches with this scale, using different variables.
